The Use of Fourier Transforms for Asynoptic Mapping: Applications to the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite Microwave Limb Sounder
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fourier analysis has been applied to data obtained from limb viewing instruments on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. A coordinate system rotation facilitates the efficient computation of Fourier transforms in the temporal and longitudinal domains. Fields such as ozone (03), chlorine monoxide (C1O), temperature and water vapor have been transformed by this process. The transforms have been inverted to provide maps of these quantities at selected times, providing a method of accurate time interpolation. Maps obtained by this process show evidence of both horizontal and vertical transport of important trace species such as 0 3 and C1O. An examination of the polar regions indicates that large scale planetary variations are likely to play a significant role in transporting mid-stratospheric 0 3 into the polar regions. There is also evidence that downward transport occurs providing a means of moving 0 3 into the polar vortex at lower altitudes. The transforms themselves show the structure and propagation characteristics of wave variations .

Terahertz local oscillator for the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite.
The Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite has a radiometer at 2.5 THz to perform global mapping of OH in the atmosphere. The OH radiometer utilizes two Schottky-diode mixers pumped by an optically pumped THz gas laser local oscillator. The laser was first turned on in space on July 22, 2004, and has performed without issue for more than 30 months. The specifications, design, and modeling...
متن کاملModified Methods of Estimating Space-Time Spectra from Polar-orbiting Satellite Data Part II : The Wavenumber Transform Method
In order to estimate space-time spectra correctly from uneven twice-daily data sampled by a polar-orbiting satellite, the wavenumber transform method (Hayashi, 1980) is modified by the use of a nonorthogonal Fourier inversion. The space-time spectra are obtained from the time-Fourier coefficients of the space-Fourier transforms of the asynoptic field with respect to its frequency-shifted wavenu...
متن کاملAura Microwave Limb Sounder observations of the Northern Annular Mode: From the mesosphere to the upper troposphere
[1] Vertical structure and evolution of the wintertime Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode (NAM), the first Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) of geopotential height anomalies, are constructed from the 2005–2009 Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements in the entire middle atmosphere between 316 hPa ( 9 km) and 0.001 hPa ( 90 km). This is the first report of NAM structure extending into the...
متن کاملCarbon monoxide measured by the EOS Microwave Limb Sounder on Aura: First results
[1] Atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) is measured by the EOS Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on NASA’s recently-launched Aura satellite. Descent has been observed in the 2004–2005 Northern Hemisphere winter polar mesosphere and upper stratosphere. During August and September 2004 enhanced CO was observed in the upper troposphere over India and Tibet. The MLS CO measurements are described and the ra...
متن کاملAssimilation of stratospheric ozone in the chemical transport model STRATAQ
We describe a sequential assimilation approach useful for assimilating tracer measurements into a threedimensional chemical transport model (CTM) of the stratosphere. The numerical code, developed largely according to Khattatov et al. (2000), uses parameterizations and simplifications allowing assimilation of sparse observations and the simultaneous evaluation of analysis errors, with reasonabl...
